The topography of Pittsburgh is made up of rivers and hills, owing to the fact that it has a distinguished transportation network that is made up of roads, bridges, tunnels, railroads, bike paths, inclines and stairways.
Welcome to the city of bridges, Pittsburgh which is adorned with a total of 446 bridges, among which the Smithfield Street Bridge is the 1st lenticular truss bridge in the world. Port Authority of Allegheny serves the mass transit system of Pittsburgh. Pat is the nation's 14th-largest urban mass transit system. Despite steep hilly routes and variable weather, Pittsburgh adopts a booming cycling community, with the Three Rivers Heritage Trail covering all the city's trails.

Travel to Pittsburgh by Air

Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas are served by Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny County Airport. Another secondary reliever airport, called the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport is located in the eastern suburb of Latrobe, which serves as a general aviation airport for east hills communities.

Pittsburgh International Airport: PIT is a civil–military international airport operated by Allegheny County Airport Authority. It is the 2nd busiest passenger airport in Pennsylvania which is served by several top airlines, connecting to some of the busiest domestic and international routes.

Getting to & from the Airport

28X Airport Flyer: This is a public bus network that provides services from PIT to Oakland and downtown in a frequency of every 20 minutes. It will approximately cost you $3.75 one way. For more details on 28X, Click Here.

Taxis: You can also opt for taxis, which are readily available in the airport and across town. A taxi ride from PIT to downtown will coast you about $40 without tip.

Shuttle: A shuttle ride to downtown from PIT will cost you around $15 to $20 per person one way.

Amtrak: It provides intercity rail connectivity. The services are provided by the Pennsylvanian  and the Capitol Limited using Penn Station.

  • Capitol Limited Route: This mid-west and northeast routes connect cities Washington, DC to Pittsburgh to Cleveland and then to Chicago.

Travel to Pittsburgh via Roadways

You can get to Pittsburgh easily through major highways. If you decide to drive from NYC, it will take you around 81/2 hours and around 3 hours from Buffalo.

  • I-76 or I-79: These two highways serve as a gateway to Pittsburgh from the north or south.

  • I-70: It serves as the main route to enter the city from the east.

  • Route 22: You can enter the city from the west via Rte 22.

  • I-376: this is the main highway that connects Pittsburgh to the eastern part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I-376 is also referred as "Parkway East."

  • I-279: This highway runs north of the city and later converges with I-79. It is also known as the "Parkway North."

Getting Around Pittsburgh

Truth be told, it's quite daunting and frustrating to drive around Pittsburgh. Due to its steep hilly landscape, roads end abruptly; one-way streets are difficult to navigate and will likely take you in circles and furthermore, you have to deal with the various bridges around.

Port Authority Transit or PAT: PAT serves the local transportation system of the city and operates a vast bus system and a limited light-rail system - "T." The fares for bus and the "T" are about $2.50 or may be free, depending on the zones. You can travel free between the four downtown T-stops.

At present Pat operates three bus routes.
  • The South Busway: This route links from downtown to the southern region of Allegheny County.

  • The Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway: It connects from the Amtrak station to the eastern suburbs.

  • The West Busway: It links from the Amtrak station to the western suburbs.

Bicycling: Pittsburghers accepts cycling as one of their adored means of transit around the city, despite steep hills and variable weather. You will find bike racks on all buses and the city allows bikes on its busway and subway system at all times. All trails in the city are included under the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
  • The Eliza Furnace Trail or Jail Trail: It spans from downtown to the East End region.

  • The North Shore Trail: This trail stretches from the Alcosan plant, continuing along the Allegheny River, the Ohio River and to Millvale.

  • The Southside Trail: It runs along the Monongahela River and links to McKeesport beyond Baldwin Borough via the Great Allegheny Passage.

Inclines: The city has two inclines that ascend Mount Washington - Monongahela Incline and Duquesne Incline.

Tunnels: Some of the main tunnels in Pittsburgh include Squirrel Hill Tunnel; Fort Pitt Tunnel; Liberty Tunnels; Armstrong Tunnel; Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel; the light rail tunnel; the Schenley Tunnel; Corliss Tunnel and the Wabash Tunnel.

Railroads: Class I railroads include CSX, Norfolk Southern (NS) and Amtrak. Class II railroads include Bessemer & Lake Erie and Wheeling & Lake Erie. Class III railroads are Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad, Allegheny Valley Railroad and Union Railroad
